The public wants rapid action on climate change and specifically on vehicle emissions. They also want to play a part in positive changes that benefit the environment.

Extreme weather events are increasingly changing citizen’s views on road traffic: 72 percent are more critical of emissions, and 70 percent no longer consider the current state of climate protection acceptable. In particular, the switch to CO2 emission-free cars is taking too long - say 79 percent. Fast-acting tools, such as digital traffic light control or smartphone apps from city administrations, on the other hand, are very popular with road users as they drastically reduce congestion.

These are the results of the Kapsch TrafficCom Index 2021, a representative survey of citizens in Germany (N=1,000).

What will cities look like in 2050, and how will transport and traffic challenges change and evolve? Will public transport become more important, or will fully connected autonomous e-cars be the future? In our new podcast, Kapsch TrafficCom CTO, Alfredo Escribá, discusses these and other questions on transport demand with Meike Jipp, psychologist and Director of Institute of Transport Research at DLR in Berlin.
